From Melbourne: Victoria State Rose Garden is located 35 kilometres west of Melbourne’s city centre, on the Princes Freeway. It is a short 30-minute drive from the city over the Westgate Bridge or via the Geelong Road. Take the Werribee / Werribee South exit to K Road.( Exit 19, C108 )

Enter via Gate 2 off K Road onto Main Drive. (also the address of Werribee Mansion & the Zoo)

From Geelong: It is a 40 minute drive along the M1. Take the C109 exit towards Werribee from the M1 Freeway. At roundabout take 2nd exit onto Princess Highway. Turn right at T intersection (Synnot St) Turn right onto Duncans Rd (C108) Turn right onto K Road. Take first right at Gate 2, Main Dr.

By Public Transport:

Step 1. From Melbourne:

Catch a train from the Melbourne CBD to Werribee station (travelling on the Werribee Line).

Step 2. From Werribee station:

Catch bus 439 (Werribee South) from Werribee station to the Rose Garden, Werribee Mansion & Zoo.

From Geelong:

Step 1: Catch a train from Geelong to Wyndham Vale Station (travelling on the Melbourne train).

Step 2: From Wyndham Vale Station catch the Bus 190 Werribee Station to Werribee station.

A working year in the garden

ALL YEAR ROUND

  • Weeding and tidying up the Garden

  • Checking the name bricks – bricks should be set in sand at a slight angle, at or just below the level of the outer brickwork, so that the mower does not damage them.

  • Check and report on suckers – let the specialists take them out.

JANUARY

  • Deadheading Stage 2 in the Tudor Rose, Leaf, Bud and the repeat-flowering cultivars in the Heritage

  • Watering new plantings throughout the Garden

  • Finish pruning once-flowering cultivars in Heritage, weepers and festoons

  • Barbeque last Wednesday of month

FEBRUARY

  • Deadheading Stage 2 in the Tudor Rose, Leaf, Bud and repeat-flowering cultivars in the Heritage

  • Watering new plants throughout the Garden

  • Committee Meeting during month

  • Barbeque last Wednesday of month

MARCH

  • Continue deadheading in the Tudor Rose, Leaf, Bud and the repeat-flowering cultivars in the Heritage.

  • Watering new plantings throughout the Garden.

  • Barbeque last Wednesday of month.

APRIL

  • Continue deadheading in the Tudor Rose, Leaf, Bud and repeat-flowering cultivars in the Heritage up to and including the second Wednesday of the month.

  • Watering new plants throughout the Garden

  • Committee Meeting during month

  • Barbeque last Wednesday of month.

MAY

  • Prepare for pruning by maintenance of Garden-owned mats, loppers, saws, ladders, etc.

  • Members to overhaul their personal pruning equipment with instruction/guidance from team members.

  • Down time chores e.g. repair and paint park benches, sheds, chairs, etc as required. Check all posts and Velcro ties on standards (avenues and weepers) and replace as necessary.

  • On receipt of firm deliveries remove roses from replacement beds and arrange for preparation of beds for new nominated roses.

  • Big Morning Tea Cancer Appeal during month

  • Barbeque last Wednesday of month

  • Pruning demonstrations for new members and other volunteers on last 2 Wednesdays of May

JUNE

  • Second and subsequent Wednesdays and Saturdays, pruning of Tudor Rose, Leaf and Bud, working in pairs with buddy system for new members.

  • Barbeque every Wednesday with gold coin donation. To be advised.

  • Committee Meeting during month

  • Public Pruning Demonstration on last Saturday in June at 11.00 am and 1.00 pm.

JULY

  • Annual subscriptions due.

  • Pruning every Wednesday and Saturday, working in pairs with buddy system for new Members.

  • Barbeque every Wednesday with gold coin donation. To be advised.

  • Planting out of new roses on arrival.

  • Watering new plants throughout the Garden.

AUGUST

  • Pruning every Wednesday and Saturday until pruning is finished throughout Garden

  • Top up mulch on all beds.
